Why The SOA / Mayans Spin-Off Is Not Going To Work

The rumor mills are buzzing that Kurt Sutter has started production on his SOA/ Mayans spin-off for FX, question is, is this a good idea?

Don’t get me wrong, Kurt Sutter IS good, really good, so it’s not a question of whether or not the show will be good.

No, as a day one, ride or die SOA fan, my concern is that the Mayan spin-off is doomed to fail because of it’s ties to Sons.

According to Entertainment Weekly, this spin-off will focus on the Mayans history- which includes a lot of interactions with the Sons.

So it’s no surprise that many fans are already talking about and anticipating appearances from SOA characters, in particular Jax (Charlie Hunnam), Clay (Ron Perlman) and Gemma (Katey Sagal).

Think about it: if you are showing the Mayans from the beginning until the present then it would make sense to see a young, living, breathing Jax and company  at some point.

Except, having any of them appear, even in the short-term, would be risky.

No matter how meticulous Sutter is, odds are by overlapping the 2 shows something would get skewed and could compromise SOA’s history.

Being Suter has stated to EW that he would not mess with SAMCRO’s history on this new show, odds are there will be no guest appearances.

Which will lead to a lot of disappointed fans (many are already complaining on social media) and probably kill the shows chances for success.

Not to mention, given the rich history it may leave the show a little lacking in terms of story.

Do I think the Mayan spin-off can work?

Maybe… I found the Mayans, and Alvarez in particular, quite interesting when watching SOA, but I have mixed feelings about this new show.

I think Sutter can create something exceptional and Emilio Rivera, who plays Alvarez, can more than carry a show.

I’m just not sure I can watch without hoping to see a glimpse of ghosts from SAMCRO.

If Sutter ever does the first 9 prequel it would have a better chance for success as it is before Jax’s time and would be easier to watch without expectations.

Seems this new spin-off’s ties to SOA are its biggest blessing and curse- only time will tell if it can stand on its own.

Do you think the SOA/Mayans spin-off can be a hit?
