Woman Who Accused Duke Lacrosse of Rape Now Accused Of Child Abuse

Four years ago, headlines were made when a woman accused three Duke University star lacrosse players of rape.  Crystal Mangum, the woman who made these false claims, now finds herself in the headlines again.  This time she is not the accuser.  Instead, she is the one being charged with both misdemeanors and a felony.

A Durham County, North Carolina found Crystal Mangum, now 32 years old, guilty of child abuse along with a charge of damaging property on Friday.  She was convicted of contributing to child abuse or neglect and of inflicting injury to personal property as well as resisting a public officer.  All of these misdemeanor charges arose from an incident in February with her live-in boyfriend.

There was one felony charge of arson, but the jury deadlocked on that count 9-3.  This charge came about because Mangum purportedly filled a bathtub with her boyfriend’s clothing and set it ablaze while three children as well as two police officers were present in the apartment.
