Xperia Play Launch Not Going As Expected

When Sony Ericsson launched its Xperia Play smartphone, it’s biggest selling point was that it would support the PlayStation Suite. The Xperia Play comes with 6 free PS1 games with 50 more games available to download.

When Xperia Play launched, no one new what to expect, but few expected game sales to be as low as they’ve been. PS1 games have seen less than 1,000 downloads. Some have seen less than 100.

According to Dominic Neil-Dwyer at PlayStation LifeStyle, the new device is completely new and is “shaking up the market.” He says that, overall, Sony Ericsson is happy with the sales figures. They were pleased, he said, with the launch, but stated that it was too early to tell if it was a great launch.

Only a few PlayStation 1 games are currently available. Most of the games are smartphone titles. However, games are being released over time, and more PS1 games will be available as time goes on.

Interstingly, while PlayStation 1 games aren’t selling as well as some would hope, the PlayStation LifeStyle App has seen between 10,000 and 50,000 downloads. The LifeStyle App allows users to get news and reviews on nearly all PlayStation products.

For now, the Xperia Play is only available in European Markets. No mention has been made as to when it will be released in the United States. However, according to Neil-Dwyer, a launch in the United States is planned for the not too distant future.
