Benedict Cumberbatch is set to star as the iconic Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Strange. According to Deadline, the “Sherlock” star is in final negotiations with Marvel Studios to play the coveted role. The short list of other potential actors included Jared Leto, Joaquin Phoenix, and Keanu Reeves. Phoenix was a front runner until the possible deal fell through.
Cumberbatch is also known for his role as Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness, and contributing his voice to the terrorizing dragon in “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.” His next project, due to be released on November 21st, is “The Imitation Game.” With so many projects this year and next, fans were unsure if the British actor would be able to fit another franchise into his schedule.
Doctor Strange, created in the 1960’s by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, is a neurosurgeon by trade, who takes up the mantle Sorcerer Supreme, using magic to battle evil forces, such as Baron Dormo and Dormmamu.
The film is set to be directed by Scott Derrickson, with Jon Spaihts responsible for the screenplay. It is scheduled for a summer 2016 release.
