2014 Back To School Tax-Free Weekend Shopping Guide: Part 2

Sixteen states currently have planned tax free holidays just in time for back to school shopping.

Depending on your state, shoppers can save on everything from back to school supplies to clothing and even computers and computer software.

Here’s part 2 of your state-by-state guide (Maryland through Virginia) outlining exactly how you can save on back to school shopping during the 2014 tax-free holiday season.

Maryland

 • When: August 10th through 16th, 2014. (Another week-long tax holiday!)
 • Eligible Tax Free Purchases: Qualifying apparel and footwear $100 or less per item.
 • What Else You Need to Know: Maryland shoppers can check out this extremely detailed list of 2014 tax free eligible items here.

Massachussetts*

 • When: *August 2014 dates to be determined. (see update: MA 2014 Sales Tax Holiday Uncertain)
 • Eligible Tax Free Purchases: Single items of tangible personal property costing $2,500 or less (excluding meals, motor vehicles, motorboats, or certain tobacco products).
 • What Else You Need to Know: The Massachusetts sales tax holiday weekend must be voted on by the Massachusetts legislature and this year, the legislature has not yet agreed upon a 2014 date.

Mississippi

 • When: July 25th and 26th, 2014.

 • Eligible Tax Free Purchases: Clothing and footwear that cost less than $100 per item.
 • What Else You Need to Know: School supplies and computers are specifically excluded from Mississippi’s 2014 sales tax holiday.

Missouri

 • When: August 1st through 3rd, 2014.
 • Eligible Tax Free Purchases: Clothing $100 or less; school supplies not to exceed $50 per purchase; computers and peripherals not to exceed $3,500; computer software $350 or less.
 • What Else You Need to Know: Not all counties, cities and districts participate in Missouri’s back to school sales tax holiday, so interested shoppers should check here to see if their local municipality is participating.

New Mexico

 • When: August 1st through 3rd, 2014.
 • Eligible Tax Free Purchases: Clothing and shoes less than $100 per unit; desktop, laptop, tablets or notebook computers up to $1,000; related computer hardware up to $500; school supplies less than $30 per unit.
 • What Else You Need to Know: New Mexico shoppers can find the full list of eligible items here.

Oklahoma

 • When: August 1st through 3rd, 2014.
 • Eligible Tax Free Purchases: Clothing and shoes priced less than $100.
 • What Else You Need to Know: In the case of BoGo (Buy One, Get One) sales, Oklahoma shoppers cannot average the total price of the items in the BoGo promotion; the exemption is based strictly on the price paid for each item.

South Carolina

 • When: August 1st and 2nd, 2014.
 • Eligible Tax Free Purchases: Clothing, footwear, school supplies, computers, printers, and software.
 • What Else You Need to Know: South Carolina shoppers can also save on household items such as bath and bedroom linens.

Tennessee

 • When: August 1st through 3rd, 2014.
 • Eligible Tax Free Purchases: Clothing $100 or less; school supplies $100 or less; computers $1,500 or less.
 • What Else You Need to Know: While computers are exempt, computer software is not and will remain taxable that weekend.

Texas

 • When: August 8th through 10th, 2014.
 • Eligible Tax Free Purchases: Clothing, footwear, school supplies, and backpacks priced under $100.
 • What Else You Need to Know: Items placed on or picked up from layaway during the Texas sales tax holiday are eligible for exemption.

Virginia

 • When: August 1st through 3rd, 2014.
 • Eligible Tax Free Purchases: Clothing and footwear priced at $100 or less; school supplies priced at $20 or less.
 • What Else You Need to Know: Computers, software, and components are specifically excluded from the tax free weekend and are subject to taxes.

Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon do not currently impose state sales taxes on their residents, so it’s tax free shopping year round for shoppers in these five states.
