Looking for a stand-out coupe that also offers practicality? The 2016 Hyundai Veloster is a clever choice.
Appealing to driving enthusiasts on a budget, the Veloster offers a few intelligent tricks making it easier to use everyday.
Unless you look closely, you may not notice the third door seamlessly integrated into the Veloster’s coupe-like design. This makes getting in and out of the back seat easier – and since the door is on the passenger side, it’s safer too.
Joining the lineup in 2016 is a new Rally Edition, which brings with it stiffer suspension, RAYS lightweight alloy wheels, a B&M Racing sport shifter and unique Matte Blue paint. Partnered with its turbocharged engine, this Veloster brings the fight to the VW GTI, Ford Focus ST and Subaru WRX.
The Veloster is available in two flavours. The base model is focused on style, comfort and affordability.
Adding a turbo to the 1.6-litre engine helps the Veloster Turbo back up its racy looks. While the base only puts out 138 hp and 123 lb-ft of torque, Turbo models bump those numbers to 201 and 195 respectively.
The other major change concerns the available transmissions. The standard Veloster can be equipped with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed dual clutch automatic. Turbos can still have a 6-speed manual, but the automatic becomes a 7-speed DCT and gets paddle shifters. Rally Editions are only available with a 6-speed manual.
Turbo models hit a nice sweet spot for most people. The base model feels a little underpowered, and while the stiffer suspension in the Rally Edition handles better, it can be overly harsh on daily commutes.
Inside all Veloster models, the cabin is classy and high-tech. A 7-inch touchscreen serves as the command centre for the infotainment system. All models are equipped with USB and auxiliary input jacks and Bluetooth to connect to additional multimedia devices.
Front seats are sporty, yet comfortable. The driver’s seat has height adjustment for shorter people, but taller drivers may have an issue with headroom.
Headroom is obviously an issue in the rear seat as well. Though, considering it is only designed for occasional use, it’s not too bad. Also, the rear door serves well if you are needing to fit a child seat or help a toddler with their belt.
Storage throughout the Veloster is good. The glove box, door bins and centre cubby are a nice size. Trunk space is decent too, and the 320 litres can grow to 984 with the split-folding rear seats down.
