Choking Hazard: Hug N’ Tug Baby Toys Recalled

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced a voluntary recall of Sassy and Carter’s-branded Hug N’ Tug Baby Toys due to a choking hazard.

The U.S. agency as well as Health Canada have cooperated with the importer of the toy, Sassy, Inc. of Kentwood, Michigan, in this voluntary recall.

The announcement states that the toy should be removed from children and they have reiterated the fact that it is illegal to resell or even attempt to resell this toy.  According to the release, the recall affects more than 45,000 toys sold.

The problem is that the beads inside the clear plastic sphere have been released in some instances, posing a choking hazard for small children.  To date there have been 12 reports of beads being released, however no injuries have been reported.

The specific styles that are being recalled are:

Sassy Hug N’ Tug Puppy, model #80213

Sassy Hug N’ Tug Monkey model #80214

Carter’s-branded Hug N’ Tug Monkey, models #61083 (blue packaging card) and #61540 (grey packaging card)

The recalled toys were sold at many stores including Toys R Us and Target and online retailers such as Amazon.com and Carters.com between July 2012 and October 2012.

If you have one of these toys, you are urged to contact Sassy, Inc. for instructions and to arrange for a free replacement toy at (800) 323-6336 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday or to visit this website and click on the Product Recall Information link.
