Now on sale at Verizon stores and online at verizonwireless.com, the long awaited Motorola smartphone finally made its bow. Verizon’s first dual-core processor that runs on their LTE network is available at a hefty $299 with a two-year contract.
The new Motorola Droid Bionic does come with an impressive set of specs – it runs Android 2.3.4 (aka Gingerbread), has a dual-core, 1GHz TI OMAP-4 processor, a 4.3-inch touchscreen protected by Corning Gorilla glass and 16GB of memory. The Corning Gorilla glass is one of the latest advances in glass – it’s unique composition makes it exceptionally tough and damage resistant.
In addition to state of the art glass, the Bionic sports an 8-megapixel, rear facing camera with flash and 1080p video capture, a front-facing camera for video chat , and can display qHD video at 960 x 540 pixels. Video can be sent through an HDMI output called MirrorMode to an external HDTV or monitor. It also acts as a mobile hotspot for up to 5 devices.
The standard suite of Google Apps and the full complement of the Google Marketplace are also available for the device – at least, all those apps that can run on the newest version of Android. It comes with wireless printing, email compatibility with Gmail, Yahoo, MS Exchange, and standard POP/IMAP services, and Flash 10.
All this hardware and capability should make the standard $50/month 5GB data plan a little more palatable. For a limited time, the LapDock accessory that turns your smartphone into an 11.6-inch laptop is available with a $100 mail-in rebate with purchase of the 5GB data plan – the LapDock is MSRP at $300. The alternate Hotspot data plan is $30 for 2GB per month.
