There ARE some Father’s Day cell phone/smartphone sales going on today – but not as many as you might expect.
In a trend we’ve noticed developing over the past two years, it seems like the major carriers are ignoring opportunities to have specific holiday related sales.
Memorial Day was virtually ignored by the major carriers. A surprise because, in the past, shoppers have had a keen interest in holiday related cell phone sales.
Sprint, AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile… none mention Father’s Day on their home pages.
The National Retail Association is estimating that $13.3 billion will be spent on Father’s Day related shopping this year – and the major carriers aren’t hot and heavy after that revenue?
That said, let’s take a look at retailers that are having Father’s Day sales.
US Cellular is one. They are promoting the Motorola Electrify 2 for a penny, and the LG Optimus F7 for $49, both on contract, in their Father’s Day sale.
Online cell phone discounter Wirefly is pushing the Samsung Galaxy S3 for $29.99 and the Motorola Droid Razr M for 99¢, both on Verizon contracts with free activation, in their Father’s Day sale. They also have the Galaxy S4 on sale with Sprint service for $139.
Another online discounter, Let’s Talk, is having a Dads and Grads sale which includes the Galaxy S4 on a Verizon contract for $169.
While not actually part of their Dad’s and Grads sale, Let’s Talk also has a ‘renewed’ Galaxy S3, a Droid Razr HD, and a number of other phones free with a Verizon contract. ‘Renewed’ appears to be their code word for refurbished. Like Wirefly, the Verizon contracts have free activation at the time this is being published.
And… that’s it for specific Father’s Day cell phone sales. Not to say the carriers aren’t having any other sales at all. Just not anything specifically targeting Father’s Day.
A bit disappointing for those of us looking for some really great deals this weekend.
