The first trailer for the 2014 remake of the musical classic Annie was released this week.
This installment of Annie will be a contemporary adaptation of the musical.
Orphan Annie will no longer be played by a curly red-haired child, but instead by Oscar-nominated Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild).
Daddy Warbucks is now Benjamin Stacks, a wealthy politician in the midst of an election, played by Jamie Foxx.
The cast also includes Rose Byrne and Cameron Diaz as Grace and Miss Hannigan, respectively.
The film’s producers include Will Smith and Jay-Z. Original songs by Jay-Z will update the soundtrack which will also include some original broadway hits.
Annie was first announced by Sony in 2011, with Willow Smith, Will Smith’s daughter cast as the lead role, however she dropped out in early 2013.
The story of the orphan Annie originated with the 1924 comic strip Little Orphan Annie. Annie the Broadway production first opened in 1977 and two film adaptations have been made, in 1982 and 1999.
Annie is set for release on December 19, 2014.
