Honda has decided to expand on their June recall of faulty airbag inflators.
This action is in response to ongoing customer concerns that their vehicle may have a faulty Takeda sourced inflator.
Honda and Takeda, have been involved in testing inflators removed from cars in the 11 most humid states and territories (Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.
This testing was initiated after concerns that continued exposure to the high humidity levels in these environments, could increase,” the possibility that a frontal airbag inflator produced by Takata could produce excessive internal pressure upon deployment and then rupture. If a driver frontal airbag inflator ruptures, metal fragments could pass through the airbag cushion material possibly causing serious injury or fatality to vehicle occupants”, according to Hondas press release.
This latest recall action brings the global total to approximately 5.4 million vehicles.
Honda Canada believes this will effect nearly 700,000 vehicles in Canada alone.
This voluntary action on Hondas part, should ease the fears of its clients. Dealers will replace the inflator free of charge.
