Memorial Day Weekend in NYC is packed with lots of fun events that won’t break the bank- some of them are even free.
Whether your looking to tour a museum, watch a parade or kick back with a drink there are plenty of budget friendly options to choose from.
To help you plan your holiday weekend here’s a list of what’s going on around the city, along with links and prices:
Beaches: All NYC beaches are open and free to the public this weekend.
Parks: Grilling is allowed, but not at all parks. Also, parties of 20 or more must get a permit (21-30 days beforehand). To play it safe, here is a list with grilling areas for the public.
Governors Island Family Festival: Governors Island can be accessed by Ferry ($2 round trip) from Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 6. Admission is FREE.
The family festival takes place this Sunday, May 24 from 12- 4 P.M. (EST) in Nolan Park. Activities include a merry-go-round, puppet making, live music, performances from the Central Park Zoo Wildlife Theater, Story Pirates and Arm of
the Sea and activities courtesy of the NY Aquarium, Children’s Museum of the Arts, Waterfront Alliance, Art of Intuitive Photography, Earth Matter and more.
The rest of Governors Island is also open all weekend long to bike, hike and enjoy many other activities.
The Kings County Fair: Aviator Sports And Events Center 3159 Flatbush Ave, Brooklyn NY. $5 admission with POP specials ranging between $25-$40.
This annual event will be going on all weekend long at Floyd Bennett Field and includes carnival rides, treats, games and more to kick off the unofficial start of summer.
Kings County Memorial Day Parade: 87th Street & 3rd Ave, Brooklyn NY. FREE to the public. Parade starts at 11 A.M. (EST) on Monday, May 25.
This is NYC’s longest-running Memorial Day Parade and salutes those who gave their lives for us.
Victoria Gardens Amusement Park: Central Park, enter at 59th Street and Sixth Avenue and walk north. Unlimited wristbands are $16 on weekends and $14 on weekdays + $7 admission fee. Kids under 36″ are free.
This amusement park was made by the same creators as Coney Island’s Luna Park, so there are lots of similar rides, like Happy Swing, Magic Bike, Minnie Mouse, Rockin Tug and The Samba Balloons.
There are local performers and game to enjoy as well, like Whac-a-Mole; please note that games are not included in the wristband price.
World’s Fair Train Show: Queens Botanical Garden 43-50 Main Street, Flushing NY 11355. Free with the price of admission (adults $12, students & senior citizens $6, kids under $12 are free).
Saturday through Monday, from 10 A.M. (EST)-5 P.M. (EST).
Have fun watching G scale model trains make their way through an outdoor display or take a train ride with the family (ride costs an added $5.)
Fleet Week Music Festival: The Flagship Brewing Co., Staten Island (40 Minthorne St. Staten Island). Free admission.
Thursday & Friday (May 22 & 23) 4–11 P.M. (EST); Sat 1–11 P.M. (EST); Sun noon–8 P.M. (EST). The Flagship Brewing Co. is closing down the entire block and having an all day music festival featuring live bands. There will also be bbq,
tacos and drinks; food and drinks are not free.
Fleet Week: Pier 92,Manhattan & USS The Sullivans Pier, Staten Island. Fleet week is full of events, but the FREE, open to the public ship tours are the highlight. Tours are available all weekend long, from 8 A.M. (EST)-5 P.M. (EST).
There are also various rescue demos and other free events available.
