New Movies for Friday, May 16

The crop of new movies for Friday, May 16th, is rather slim.  Only two films are opening in wide release today–Godzilla and Million Dollar Arm.

Having made his first movie appearance 60 years ago, Godzilla is once again expected to devour the box office this weekend.  This time, he’ll have help from Bryan Cranston, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, and Juliette Binoche, who costar with him in director Gareth Edwards’ reboot.

Although Godzilla’s definitely the star of the show, Edwards gives the human element more storyline and screen time this time around.  Cranston is a scientist and Taylor-Johnson plays his son, a Navy bomb specialist, with Juliette Binoche and Elizabeth Olsen as their respective wives.

Million Dollar Arm is a Disney film which casts Mad Men‘s Jon Hamm as sports agent J.B. Bernstein. JB stages a talent contest to find cricket players in India that he can turn into major league baseball pitchers in the US.  Co-starring Lake Bell, Suraj Sharma (Life of Pi), and Madhur Mittal (Slumdog Millionaire), the movie is based on a true story and directed by Craig Gillespie.

Other movies this weekend are opening in limited release.  The Immigrant stars Marion Cotillard and Joaquin Phoenix in a James Gray-directed film about a woman forced into prostitution in Manhattan.

Half of a Yellow Sun stars Chiwetel Ejiofor and Thandie Newton in a drama about civil war in 1960’s Nigeria.  Romain Duris and Audrey Tautou star in Chinese Puzzle, about a father who moves to New York following his ex-wife and their two children.

So, will Godzilla eat your movie-going money this weekend, or will you opt for something else?  Let us know in the comments.
