When General Motors’ 2015 models start rolling into showrooms, their new OnStar with 4G LTE will instantly make them a favourite for modern families.
OnStar is not a new feature, but this latest generation with 4G LTE makes the vehicle a Wi-Fi hotspot, allowing you to connect up to seven mobile devices.
GM is the first manufacturer to offer 4G LTE wireless service across it range of cars, trucks and SUVs. Audi’s A3 is the only other vehicle available with a built-in 4G LTE connection.
OnStar with 4G LTE will be available on most 2015 GM models (30 to start), including those most popular with families such as the Chevy Malibu, Impala and Equinox.
Gone are the days when family road trips meant kids could climb all over the back seat or lay wherever they could get comfortable (I personally spent a lot of time on the floor). We now know it’s much safer to keep them strapped in their seats, where turning their heads is sometimes near impossible. While this saves their lives, it means we, as the parents, need to find another way for them to entertain themselves.
Smart phones and tablets have become popular choices, as kids can watch the latest kitty video on YouTube or play a game where they are being endless chased by some zombie security guard. However, children have no concept of data or roaming charges, and a fun family vacation can quickly become quite an expensive excursion.
The 4G LTE service will be free for the first three months, or three gigabytes. After, there are a variety of payment options for you to continue the service, so you can find the pricing plan that works best for you.
Having a reliable mobile Wi-Fi connection should prove to be a valuable asset in a lot more situations than just family vacations. I think contractors and other traveling business-people will find it a big time-saver and possibly more economical than their current data plan.
