Paranormal Activity 4 Review: Scary… Or Just Old?

Paranormal Activity 4 Review: Scary… Or Just Old?

It’s October again, which means one thing for the world of movies: it’s time for yet another installment of “Paranormal Activity”.

The found footage franchise has been making an impact with moviegoers for over 3 years now, and after an interquel and a prequel, it is time to finally continue the horror story in “Paranormal Activity 4.

Though the film will bring in a crowd, is the new installment going scare the pants off moviegoers?

The plot behind “Paranormal Activity 4” revolves around a family being haunted by a demonic presence that seeks something within their home. Does this sound familiar? It should because the plot to this film is just a rehash of its previous predecessor. It is one thing to follow the same formula, but it is another thing to keep to the structure and not establish anything; and that is exactly what “Paranormal Activity 4” does.

Paranormal Activity” is not known for having fleshed out characters, and the fourth installment continues that trend. The majority of the film follows Alex as she tries to figure what is wrong with the house. This kind of character is nothing new for this franchise, so it leaves no impression. Other characters either fall under being uninteresting or just being nonexistent.

Though the story and characters have fallen through, perhaps the scares make this film worth the price of admission. If that is your thought process, then allow me to be the bearer of bad news. The only terrifying moments in “Paranormal Activity 4” are the nonstop bombardment of jump scares.  A jump scare is good  very now and again, but when the entire scare tactic is nothing but startling moments, then the horror film is no longer scarey. It’s just annoying.

As you can imagine, “Paranormal Activity 4” is not a good time at the movies. The film establishes nothing to move the so called plot along; and to top it all off, it’s really not that terrifying. Movie-goers will be startled every now and again, but the scary moments will leave your mind as soon as they pass.  I have never been a fan of this film series, but “Paranormal Activity 4” not only succeeded at being a disappointment, it found a way to make this franchise even staler.
